To achieve best possible combustion in our engine, we want to have:

a beam of solid fuel, hitting a warm piston top.
a beam of solid fuel hitting the top of the cylinder liner.
let some of the fuel go to the overflow pipe.
an atomization of the fuel injected into the combustion chamber.

Some engine manufacturers recommend that washing of the compressor side is not carried out. Is this due to;

The thermal shock exhibited by the vanes.
Greasy sludge from the compressor sticking between the fins in the air coolers, necessitating extra cleaning of these.
Large volumes of water being carried over into the cylinders of the engine.
The nozzle ring becoming corroded.

During inspection of piston and liners through scavenging ports, piston rings on all units were found as shown (micro seizure). The best way to stop its progress is:

Increase cylinder oil consumption
Replace all piston rings
Increase cylinder oil consumption, determine fuel quality and readjust the fuel oil purifiers
Run engine at lower load.

Why is the tightening of the timing chain important?

To avoid high wear down of chain and chain wheel tooth and a potential breakdown.
To reduce the noise level
To get the right timing on the engine.
To reduce vibration in the chain.

If you are going to enter the engines crankcase (go inside), how will you secure the engine after you have closed the main starting air valve ?

Engage the turning gear on the engine.
Close absolutely all valves on the starting air bottle.
Close the instrument air supply.
Keep a man posted in the control room to watch that nobody tries to start the engine.

What will the effect be, if you have a fuel injector valve that is dripping after the injection is finished ?

Less carbonizing.
Damage to piston and liner.
Greater output of the engine.
Better combustion.
