Most of the engine makers recommend to change the cylinder head gaskets each time a piston overhaul is carried out. Why?

To increase the consumption of parts so they can make more money
To obtain a proper sealing and correct distance between piston and cover in TDC position
To be granted a proper sealing with a new gasket
To avoid heat transfer to the cylinder head.

What is the single most important factor when dealing with the hydraulic oil for a crane?

Ensure all service tanks are kept at maximum level.
Any oil spillages to be salvaged for further use.
All of the mentioned alternatives.
Use of dedicated, clean dry transfer equipment, ie. buckets, tubing and pumps etc.

What does atomizing mean when we talk about injectors?

The injector is extremely hard to open
That no solid beam of fuel shall be present
The fuel injector is leaking
Very high fuel oil pressure out of nozzle

If it is found that a leakage from the gland of a centrifugal pump is excessive. The correct procedure is:

Ensure the bilge well to which it is draining is regularly pumped out.
Re-pack the stuffing box loosely with the correct size packing at the earliest opportunity.
Tighten the gland as much as possible until the leakage stops.
Fit oversize packing to the stuffing box.

What will You do if the heat transfer capacity is dropping, and we know that flow and heat energy corresponds to the specifications?

Add some more plates to the exchanger.
Increase the pressure.
Use the 'cleaning in place' arrangement or open the heat exchanger for visual inspection and manual cleaning.
Try to increase the flow.

A centrifugal pump has been opened and you are going to assemble the housing. Flanges are ment for gasket, but there is no spare in stock. What is the best alternative for gasket material?

Thick paper (old charts).
Cork gasket.
Reinforced pilot packing.
Thick rubber gasket.

On routine daily inspection you notice that there is a light arching between an alternator's carbon brushes and rotor sliprings, with alternator operating at 70% load. Should you:

Increase the tension on the brushes
Move the position of the brushes around the sliprings to find the correct neutral position
Check the surface of the sliprings, polish if necessary and bed in the brushes
Reverse the polarity of the excitation voltage at the brush holder connection

When carrying out piston overhaul, it is important to clean the ring grooves properly. Why?

To make the rings fit in the groove
That piston rings can move freely in the grooves.
To make sure gas pressure can enter freely on top of and behind the piston ring
All rings must be changed to maintain a perfect sealing

You are overhauling a centrifugal pump and you are going to fit the ballbearing (tight fit).How would you carry out the work?

Use a plastic hammer and knock it on the shaft.
Use emery cloth on the inner ring (contact surface) of the bearing.
Heat the ballbearing in oil, and put it on the shaft.
Use emery cloth on the bearing surface on the shaft.
